FOLLOWING the announcement by Cheshire West and Chester Council (CWAC) today (22nd May 2020) that it is to re-open many of its facilities, including Multi Use Games Areas (MUGAs) and skate parks, Winsford Town Council wishes to clarify its position.

The Town Council is responsible for two MUGAs in the town – located at Town Park and Wharton Recreation Ground.

These facilities will remain closed for the time being as the Town Council cannot guarantee that social distancing would be maintained by those using them.

Town Mayor Ailsa Gaskill-Jones commented that, “we are well aware that people want things to return to normal as soon as possible, but we have to put the safety of our residents before anything else”.

“To this end, we will keep our park facilities closed and we will await further guidance from the government and other bodies before we review this position”.

On a positive note, the Town Council has agreed that the Wharton Recreation Ground Bowling Club can use the bowling green at the Recreation Ground so long as social distancing measures remain in place.

The decision was taken at the Council meeting held on 18th May 2020 and was unanimous from those Councillors present.

The Mayor said, “we had a request from the club to use the greens following the Prime Minister’s announcement on 10th May to relax certain aspects of lockdown.”

“We have agreed to this request, but on the strict proviso that the club is responsible for those using the bowling greens”.

The Town Council also confirmed that its meeting that other facilities at the parks would remain off-limits to the public, such as outdoor gyms and playgrounds, but the allotments and parks would stay open as they have been since the start of the pandemic.

Cllr Gaskill-Jones concluded by saying, “it’s a very delicate balancing act between keeping people safe and allowing people to enjoy themselves and keep healthy”.
